This book kept my interest and would look forward to reading the next book in the series if the price were right.

What a disappointment

This book was so not my cuppa. It should have been not had all the makings. But from the just squeeked out happy ending after loads and loads of tragedy, to the many typos and other mistakes...I ended up taking days to finish and get super disappointed. Aside from the ending, this book needs major editing. Also, it reads like it wants to be historical but feels far too contemporary in many ways. Plus, the made up country is described more like a city. We don’t even know where it is in the world. They way it mentions Europe or the continent, it sounds like it’s supposed to basically be England. So many people die too. It’s like the author was a bit too inspired by GoT. Idk. I was just largely disappointed. I would have rated higher if the book had ended with a true HEA and not the crap that happened with davina and Damien at the end as well as Tristan and Esmeralda. It was truly just annoying. Also: typically princes are “your highness” and kings “your magesty”. Not sure where the “your grace” came from (GoT again? Even thought that’s still not quite right). At least it’s a made up country, but still. Your magesty/highness is pretty SOP across monarchs. But whatevs. Do not read if you like your historical more believable and with a true HEA.

Unpredictable!

Usually when I read these stories I can guess what is going to happen and how it will happen, not this one. It had many plot twists and turns and it was not all “roses” for the protagonists. They faced believable problems and moral confrontations. It kept me turning the pages and wondering how it would end. I downloaded for free and then had to buy, which usually doesn’t happen because I didn’t like it enough to care what happens to the other characters. The secondary characters were developed enough to make me care. I would absolutely recommend this story.

I gave this book 100 pages to get better, but everything I read just made me hate the main character more. He’s selfish, arrogant, whiny, rude, uses poor women like toys, and considers “being aware of her own beauty” and wanting to be treated like a partner to be damning character flaws in a woman. Perhaps he grows up at some point. I’m just tired of waiting for a single decent human action from anyone in this story.
